Ode to a TAR'd Standby Database

By Robert Freeman

Stand-by database on Solaris,
Worked so well for me.
So I tried standby again,
and it dosen't work on NT.

If it works well on two NT boxes,
one would just so reason,
No one would think that this,
would be Oracle's treason.

So, primary database, STARTUP, ho!
It opens with lightning speed.
Opening with promptness and haste
that you expect from Oracle indeed!

Then, taking the backup standby control file,
I put it into it's proper place.
I start Server Manager,
my hands type STARTUP NOMOUNT in haste.

HORRAY, it starts, the instance is up,
but alas, another step remains to be.
Enter, ALTER DATABASE MOUNT STANDBY DATABASE,
Oh! I find Oracle has left me up in a tree.

The control file, Oracle reports,
is unfortunately absolutely no good,
The control file, Oracle Reports
belongs to the other databases neighborhood.

My head hangs low,
of defeat I am absolutely not fond.
I must have my victory,
Ye Oracle primary and standby must bond!

So, I open my TAR,
the answer I do await,
and Oracle grins it's evil grin,
as I sit and wonder of my standby's fate.
