Protect from Prying Eyes: Encryption in Oracle 10g, Part 1
By Arup Nanda

Simply put, encryption is the art of disguising data. Suppose the combination to my wall safe is 37529. Because I am not very good at remembering numbers, I keep on forgetting it. So I come up an idea — I write it down on a piece of paper and tape it on the safe! There it is — it’s there when I need it, and I don’t have to worry about forgetting it. What a great idea!

But, there is a slight problem. If a burglar happens to see it, there is no need for him to try to crack the code — it’s all there in plain sight! So, I change the strategy a little bit — I decided to disguise the combination or alter it in such a way that only I know how it was altered. For instance, I may decide to reverse the digits; the number becomes 92573, which is on the piece of paper. The burglar will see the number 92573, which is not the safe combination. He will not be able to guess the correct one since he does not know how it was altered in the first place.

DB2

Parlez-Vous BI?
By Robert Catterall

Everything you need to know to talk intelligently about business intelligence.

Does this scenario sound familiar? You're a DB2 DBA with years of experience managing operational database systems. You're in a meeting in which some business intelligence (BI) experts - your colleagues or consultants - are discussing various aspects of a new DB2-based decision-support system that's being developed. You hear these people talking about OLAP, MOLAP, ROLAP, marts, ODSs, stars, and snowflakes, and you think to yourself, "What in the world are these people talking about?" You're faced with two unpleasant options: Smile and nod and hope that no one asks for your opinion; or publicly admit your bewilderment.

Believe me, I've been there, and I have a suggestion for you: Before you go into that meeting, read this column. I'll do my best to demystify these and other BI concepts. If I can learn this stuff, so can you.

Stored Outlines - Part 2
Topic Extracted from Knowledge Xpert for PL/SQL

Stored outlines bring stability to your application's SQL statements. It is possible to make a better decision than the CBO, and then to want the application use your decision over the CBO's decision. Additionally, changes in the data distribution can alter an execution plan of a SQL statement, once the CBO has new statistics on the new data. Stored outlines are also great when working with third party applications, where you cannot touch the SQL statements, but you'd like to alter how they run. You can provide execution plan stability through the use of stored outlines.

Data Archiving: Problems and Solutions
By David Poole, Kudos

Technology advances allow old-fashioned house keeping tasks to be put off for increasing periods of time. For example, the increase in terms of storage capacity and machine speed allowing you to get away without an archiving strategy for an extended period of time, perhaps even beyond your tenure with a company.

Personally I look on such a practice as being the computing equivalent of leaving your underwear on your bedroom floor for someone else to pick up. Eventually such practice will return to haunt you. Andy Warren identified not having an archiving strategy as worst practice in his article Worst Practice - Not Having An Archive Plan For Each Table. This article will look at some of the problems and potential solutions to implementing an archival strategy.

Project Management Tips & Techniques
Common Estimating Errors
Tom Mochal, www.tenstep.com
Each month, Tom Mochal, President of TenStep, Inc. presents project management tips and techniques for planning and managing a project. TenStep, Inc. has a comprehensive, scalable project management process called TenStep (www.TenStep.com), as well as a project lifecycle process called LifecycleStep (www.LifecycleStep.com). Pipeline readers receive 20% off any TenStep or LifecycleStep purchase by entering the coupon code of "Pipeline" in their purchase.

The estimation process is an art and a science. However, once you learn good estimating processes and techniques, you will hopefully be able to move more toward the “science” side of estimating and rely less on the “art” side. You can get better and better at estimating, but by nature you can never be perfect. Here is a list of common estimating problems that should be avoided.
