Graceful Failover and Failback Procedures, in Non-Dataguard Environments
By Brian Keating, DatabaseSpecialists
This document describes the procedures to run “graceful” failovers and failbacks of hot standby databases, in environments that are not using Dataguard. A “graceful” failover is one that does not require databases to be opened with the “resetlogs” option – and as a result, graceful failbacks do not require the primary database to be rebuilt (i.e., they do not require the standby database’s datafiles to be copied to the primary server.) Graceful failovers and failbacks are also known as “switchovers” and “switchbacks”.

Creating Stored Outlines - Part 1
Topic Extracted from Knowledge Xpert for PL/SQL
Stored outlines bring stability to your application's SQL statements. It is
possible to make a better decision than the CBO, and then to want the application use your decision over the CBO's decision. Additionally, changes in the data distribution can alter an execution plan of a SQL statement, once the CBO has new statistics on the new data. Stored outlines are also great when working with third party applications, where you cannot touch the SQL statements, but you'd like to alter how they run. You can provide execution plan stability through the use of stored outlines.

Effective Data Filtering
By Robert Rowe
This is the second article intended to illustrate professional programming techniques using Visual Basic and MySQL. The first article discussed why we should avoid data binding. It can be viewed
here. This article discusses writing software that helps the user effectively work with large amounts of data. The approach that I will describe is called filtering. I have expanded on my sample program from the previous article to exemplify the techniques that are described herein. You can download it

Many projects have one overall budget that includes all of the project labor costs, hardware/software costs, materials costs, etc. This is fine for smaller and medium sized projects. However, as a project gets larger it helps to have the overall budget broken down into smaller subsets. This is a similar to the concept of breaking down a project with long duration into a set of smaller projects. Having your budget allocated at a lower level allows you to keep better control of the details and it may point out potential budget trouble quicker than having everything rolled up into one consolidated project budget.
