Tablespace Map Script This script shows a "map" of database block allocations for a tablespace. This script can be used to examine free space fragmentation among other issues. Click Here for the Script. Brian Peasland, our newest Pipeline SYSOP, posted this script to the "Script Exchange" conference on the DBA Pipeline. To access the script exchange, just log on to "Pipe Talk" and click on the "Script Exchange" conference. Win a Free Cap! Donate useful code to the Pipeline Library, and we will mail you a "stylin" canvas/embroidered RevealNet baseball cap if your utility is published in the newsletter. Linux Maximus: Gladiator-Like Oracle
Performance, Part 1 Like many people today, the Linux movement enthralls me. Not just because I'm more of a UNIX based DBA, but because of the amazing speed at which major vendors such as HP, Compaq, Dell, IBM and Oracle have embraced this open source operating system. But no matter how fashionable Linux may be, that popularity does not automatically translate into nor guarantee performance. Believe it or not, it's quite easy to get upwards of 1000% database improvement through proper Linux tuning and database configuration for Linux. In this issue, we'll review some very high ROI approaches. Click Here for part 1 of a series of papers aimed at maximizing performance on Linux systems. Statistical analysis and testing was performed with the aid of Quest's Benchmark Factory, a superior facility for database load testing and capacity planning. Real-Life Recovery: Perspective, Preparation,
Performance In light of the tragic events of September 11, many organizations have been forced to review or re-think their Disaster Recovery plans and procedures. We thought we would re-print an article we featured in the August 2000 issue of the Pipeline Newsletter. Most sites focus on backups and other issues before addressing recovery. Single points of failure are shortcuts to disaster, both business and career. The only measure of a successful backup plan is how completely recovery can be performed. The time to practice a recovery is not when a production system is down and the Order Entry clerks are waiting. Personnel can be the single greatest weakness in recovering a database, but they can also be the greatest strength. Click Here for the paper.
This concise pocket reference, authored by RevealNet and published by O'Reilly & Associates (76 pages) contains a series of easy-to-use checklists providing helpful reminders of the procedures Oracle DBAs must follow when performing common database administration tasks. In this book, you will find checklists for database management, installation and configuration and network management responsibilities. Point-In-Time Recovery for DB2 on OS/390 Point-In-Time (PIT) recovery can be to an image copy or a point of consistency. The point of consistency can be established by the QUIESCE utility by recording the RBA or log record sequence number (LRSN) in a sysplex data sharing environment in the START_RBA column of SYSCOPY. The older term RBA is often used rather than LRSN and is used in this section. Keep in mind that is actually the LRSN in a sysplex data sharing environment. The RECOVER utility parameter TOLOGPOINT should be used rather than TORBA. It has the same effect in a data sharing and non-data sharing environment. It is required in a data sharing environment and should be used in a non-data sharing environment if there is any possibility of using data sharing in the future. This avoids having to change TORBA to TOLOGPOINT if it is decided to use data sharing. The goal of recovery to an RBA is to eliminate updates made after the PIT recovery. Click Here for the article. UTL_SMTP: E-Mail from PL/SQL Sending electronic mail from PL/SQL is a long awaited feature that finally arrived with version 8.1 of the database. Finally the outside world can be notified directly of events within the database using standard PL/SQL packages. Things like notifying users of important data changes or notifying the DBA of impending lack of storage space can now be performed within PL/SQL. Granted that sending mail from the database has been available for quite some time using methods like creating text files of mail commands for CRON jobs to process later or similar interfaces but now it can be done directly from PL/SQL! PL/SQL Best Practices" Quest Software presents a special seminar, offered only once in the US this year. Join PL/SQL Expert and renowned author, Steven Feuerstein for tips and techniques that will improve the performance and maintainability of your PL/SQL programs. While there are a number of tools that help you tune the SQL side of your application, PL/SQL tuning has been largely ignored. This seminar will show you how to take advantage of high-performance PL/SQL features such as bulk array processing in dynamic SQL and data caching in packages. You will also learn how to define your variable data structures for top efficiency. In addition, this seminar will help you build thoroughly tested, error proof code. Register Now! Click Here for Details. Testing for Performance In general, code development or testing should never be done on the production server. The reason for this is simple - since there is no "bug-free" code your program might adversely affect all users currently connected to the production server. However, to get an idea of how your code will perform in the production environment, you might want to test it with some realistic data. Click Here for the article.
